Fall Activities with "The Carolot Crew"

The October trials saw me in the ring with my very first ever PCD. I did want to experience this at least once. It was alot of fun. My team-mate for this event was Ch Carolot's KD Canasta TD, UTD. KD then went on tho pass her Rally Novice at the Nov. trials as well
Entering obedience for the first time was Brooke. She succeeded in passing her novice with 3 High in Trial and the 4th time with a 196. She also received high aggregate.
Brooke ( owner Kelly M) also obtained her Rally Novice title in Nov. to become : Ch Carolot's Lady of the Lake CD, RN.
"Ch Carolot's IC is Having a Ceili "adds a new RN to her name. Owned and handled by Elaine F. Kaeleigh and Elaine even pulled off their first leg in "advanced"
Ch Carolot's Noble Hunter, WCI, TD, CD, RN, (Rowdy) obtained his Rally advanced title and also his first 2 legs on excellent. Congratulations Joni.

Canadian Dachshund Nationals

At the Canadian Dachshund Nationals this past weekend at the Tradex Centre in Abbotsford BC, Can Ch Wiretaps Cat Ballou took BOS to BOB in SW Dachshunds and Wiretaps Inspector Gadget took Winners Dog to complete his Championship.
Both dogs are bred & owned by Janet Rein.

Halo's First Obedience Titile

I am very pleased to announce tha Halo, Satika's Angel with Serenity, has earned her Pre-Novice (PCD) title by qualifying in 3 out of 4 trials at the WDOC. Halo celebrated her 2nd Birthday on October 22 (the first day of the trials), by qualifying in 2 trials! Attached is her photo with her 2 qualifying ribbons. This is quite an accomplishment given that Shiba Inu are rarely seen in the obedience ring. We are thrilled with her performance and had faith all along that she was capable of obtaining obedience titles. Onward and upward to training for Novice class. Hmm... Heeling Off-Leash with a Shiba?? Yep, it's gonna happen! Now I never said it would be easy, but Lord knows I'll try! If my Akitas could do it, so can my "Little Angel"!

Over the summer our 1 year old weimaraner 'Petra' -

registered as 'One Trax Mind' was very busy...

In August

Gained her AKC field trial derby points in Washington by placing

1st in a derby stake. Passed the North American Versatile
Hunting Dog Association (NAVHDA) Utility Test (UT)
with a Prize 2 in North Dakota.

In Sept

Placed 1st in the Weimaraner Club of America western field

futurity stake in Oregon. Also placed 1st in an
AKC amateur gun dog field trial stake in Oregon

Summer with the "Carolot Crew"

We had some fun in several venues over the summer.

Kaleigh finished her championship in July. "CH Carolot IC
is having a Ceili" is owned by Elaine Ford.

Carol's dog's - KD, Keeper and KC -
kept her very busy this summer.
In August, after completing her tracking UTD in June,

KD went on to finish her championship and is now

CH Carolot's KD Canasta UTD,TD.

In July Keeper (above) completed her 2 agility titles. She is now;
OTCH Carolot's Kris Miss Keepsake TDX,UTD,WC,RE,AgN,AgJN.

Also in August KC passed her WCX. Now

MOTCH/TCH Carolot's Ode to KC, RE, WCX, AgX, AgjI.

Congratulations also to Rowdy who passed his WCI

at these same tests. Owned by Joni Peterson he is now

Can CH Carolot's Noble Hunter RN, WCI, CGN, CD.

In September, Brooke, owned by Kelly Mohr, also
finished her championship. Congratulations to

CH Carolot's Lady of the Lake.

Prairie Canine Academy Dog Show

Many members of the Wascana Club drove out of town this past

weekend to present their dogs at Balgonie's Annual Prairie Canine Academy conformation show. Kennels, chairs, tables, grooming bags, leashes and more were unloaded Thursday night and

throughout the weekend members could be seen primping,

brushing, and blowdrying - the dogs....in the chase for points.

Congratulations to all participants on their showings.

Dari the Tibetan Terrier spent his summer holidays with Trina Neil

starting Aug 1st and ended up in 3rd place for TT's in Canada;

took BISS this past weekend all 7 BOB and a Group IV and

managed four other Group IV's. Competition is really tough out

there right now, forgot this is when all the top dogs are out

scrambling for those final points. Dari is now known as

BISS BPISS Ch Aisha's Oneeto D'Artgnan RN CGN - by Pat D.

What an exciting weekend for us at the Prairie Canine Academy
in Balgonie. Charlie got his Championship in 4 shows! He won
Best of Winners 4 out of 5 shows. Not bad for a first time handler
and first time in the ring for Charlie. We are so proud of him.

Kerhaven's All That I Am (Atia) showed for her first time on

Sept 18th in the new Baby Puppy class. Along with her were

three of her littermates. She took BBPIB, her brother Sonny,

took winners male and BOS to her BB. Then she went on to take

BBPIG and finally BBPIS. Here is the pic I had done for BBPIG..

the other has her dad in it but she is sitting in that one..I chose

this because she is in a nice show pose. Though only having been

to one handling class..she posed so like her daddy I was very
proud of her. Handling her while I handled one of her brothers..is
Trudy Taphorn of Tamaron collies. She is of course Kennedy's
(Atia's daddy dog) breeder/owner. Thus I thought for my baby's
first time in the ring..it was fitting that 'grandma' Trudy should

Summertime 2011

Once the rain left, it was a beautiful summer and members of the Wascana Club were kept busy. They could be found raising puppies, running around the agility course, fetching ducks on the retrieving grounds,

showing their stuff at dog shows, relaxing at the beach or spending their holiday time with their dogs.

Cdn/Am Ch. Diogenoir Top Trill Thrill (DAX) ,a 7-year-old Pomeranian, found a new home with me this summer. Since then we have enjoyed many walks on the bike path and attended a few shows. Dax took BB 17 times out of 18 shows entered plus a Group 2nd and two Group 3rds. I felt that was pretty good for my little old man – of course, I am a little biased.

Wascana Dog Obedience Club members and volunteers met on June 25th
and 26th for a Hot Dog fundraiser at the Co-Op. We enjoyed spending
time in the community, visiting with club members and their companions.

UPDATE - NEW PUPPY PICTURE!

On April 30 Dream (Glasgowhill Follow That Dream CD RN) gave birth to a beautiful big healthy litter of nine puppies. Sire is Am/Can Ch Tamaron's The Real Deal TDI.

We have four boys, five girls. Only three are tricolors like Dream..and one of them is a smooth. Natch..I am tri poor around here...LOL

I do have at least ONE smooth sable merle female..so it is not like she didn't give me a choice:>) But that little tri is a beaut!!

Oh well time will tell. One of the beautiful sable merle males and they are both really NICE, is going to be the new best bud of Liandra Bell. Liandra was here through the whelp which began with first puppy, the tri smooth presenting at 2:15 am only moments before Liandra arrived..and the whelp continued at a nice pace ending at 6:31 am with a little sable girl. It was so nice for once having a second pair of hands:>) Thank YOU Liandra:>)) See here a pic of my beautiful Dream girl with her babies.

She's a Lady

Dream is unable at this time to compete in March Rally trial due to the fact that she recently returned from Alberta where she spent quality time with Canada's No 1 smooth collie. So she is now an...ahem... " A lady in waiting" (we HOPE!!!). Thus her mingling with her buddies days are numbered until much later. So the onus is on little Charisma to do a bit of trialing and maybe grab a title in Novice next month. The breeding didn't quite go as planned. Dream was supposed to cycle in mid March..all was arranged. I had a dog sitter all lined up to come house sit and care for my fur kids, while Dream and I flew to Edmonton where my cousin would meet us. Then we would drive Dream to Busby, drop her with the breeder who owned the stud and go on to Athabasca, where I would enjoy a few days visiting with my cousin and a few friends...but seems my little tri collie had OTHER plans. She has cycled every 11 months like clock work from her first heat..but this time she cycles in her 10th month bless her little heart. So SHE goes to Alberta and I got to stay home and wait since my sitter couldn't come in FEBRUARY!! ...All will be forgiven once she presents me with beautiful puppies.

Canine Good Neighbour Test

Wascana Dog Club held the CKC Canine Good Neighbour test on Saturday January 15^th. The exercises are designed to emphasize your dogs willingness to accept strange situations and people with calm quiet confidence. The dogs must politely accept patting and being brushed, wait while you stop to greet someone and before going through an open door, stay at the end of a leash, come when called, pass by another dog and through crowds of noisy people, stay with someone else and calmly accept all manners of equipment people use (strollers, bikes, crutches, skateboards, etc.) If they can accomplish all of this without jumping up, barking or lunging they pass the CGN.
The day was a great success thanks to Jill’s organization and the involvement of many members of the club. Jill’s parting words – “If you evaluated, cleaned, participated, volunteered, brought props, tried to do the hula, or made lunch – you know who you all are, and thank you! Congratulations to the teams who passed their CGN today.”

Rowdy's New Year Resolutions

Rowdy's Resolutions for 2011.

1. Try to control myself in agility - The release command means to go forward, not turn around and steal that green frog from the unsuspecting owner standing in line behind me.
2. Quit eyeing mom's new Christmas mocassions - Hmmmm - nice soft leather with some sort of fur stuff on top - Is that fake rabbit?
3. Which reminds me..... Catch that smart alec she-devil rabbit that torments me in the park every morning!!
4. Pass my CD this year! Just have to remember to follow mom and not take the opportunity to play with "that other good looking fellow" in the mirrors at the Regina Kennel Club. Maybe Deb is right and the place is haunted!
5. Encourage Joni to quit being such a stuck up and let me enthusiastically greet every person and dog that I can to wish them a Happy New Year!
6. Continue my seach and destroy mission to eliminate the world of "squeakers".
7. Remember not to suddenly stand straight up when I'm lying under the coffee table.
8. Lastly, to get my owners to go shopping. I need to provide more variety and choice in the shoe "gifts" I offer people who come through the door. People don't grab the old boots as quickly as when I present the new Italian leather sandals.

Santa Parade & Poem

Many club members braved the cold to participate Southland Mall’s annual Santa Parade. While the route wasn't too long, getting a float decorated, plus ensuring the member’s dogs are good to go, takes a great deal of work from our members as well as others that they can hook into helping. The club had a wonderful entry depicting the theme of this years parade, "Christmas, then and now" with the float decorated as two living rooms representing a former era with Christmas tree and fireplace, and the present one offering a very large TV and gaming system. While various breeds are represented in the club, this particular day, we had two little dogs participating and Golden Retrievers. Everywhere you looked there was Goldens and more Goldens. Looks like we might have to consider a name change to the Wascana Golden Retriever club. All members and their dogs had a great time and that's what makes our club of the best. - Elaine.

Twas a month & 5 days before Christmas, when all through the house

Lianne was a-rushing to organize dogs, leash & spouse;

The stockings were hung on the cardboard chimney with care,
In hopes that the float wouldn’t fall apart before they got there;

The dogs were all dressed in green and reds,

While Carol’s make believe antlers danced on their heads;

And Elaine in her 'kerchief, Kelly & Carol in their cap,
Had just settled their capes and dogs on their lap,

When out on the road there arose such a clatter,
Joni was surprised to realize there was nothing the matter.

Away to greet the crowd, time flew like a flash,
As Yo raced down Albert in a 50 yard dash,
She wanted a picture of Sonny & Jill in the snow
and snapped lots of goldens with owners in tow,

Then, what to her wondering eyes should appear,
but the float with a Sheltie & Bichon & Linda dear.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
She knew in a moment it must be St. Rick.

More rapid than eagles, the GOLDENS, they came,
Kids whistled, shouted, and called them “Air Bud” by name;

Braving the cold! to the Southland Mall!
Finally dismantle the float & dash away all!"

Said goodbye to our friends and drove the dogs out of sight,

Dream Earns Her Title

Dream earned her title at the Rally trials..all scores were respectable:>) She is now Glasgowhill Follow That Dream CD, RN. Now it is on to DOG SPORTS after the new year..and eventually agility. Another New Adventure

I was so impressed with Lianne taking out my Dari, a Tibetan Terrier, who was scared to go into the ring but did a beautiful job in the conformation ring bringing home BPISS as a puppy and completing his Ch
over USA Ch and imports from the USA and then going back to the obedience ring which I have not done for many, many years. To have Lianne give me two High in Class in the Rally-O trials and four passes -
what an unbelieveable achievement for a Tibetan Terrier. Maybe there is hope for us to continue as we hope to get a CD and go for CDX and who knows...

I have bred #1 TT's in Canada and have had fun so this is another new adventure and have had a OTCH thanks to Gail Carroll - one can only dream.

Tracking

This past summer, I achieved the UTDX title on 2 dogs. KC obtained her title at the Wascana tests in June and Bobbie got her title at the Winnipeg tests in September. By passing these tests, they are now called tracking champions.

You need to pass all four of the tracking tests available to become a tracking champion. First there is the "tracking dog" (TD) and the more advanced field test called "Tracking Dog Excellent"(TDX)

In 2005 the urban tests were developed. The "urban test" UTD and the Urban dog Excellent test ( UTDX) Since it's developement in 2005, there have only been one or two dogs a year (across) Canada) to pass the most difficult UTDX. KC became the 13th dog to ever pass, and Bobbie became the 14th dog to pass.

It's taken a long five years to reach these goals, but now we can be called:

The Last of her Litter

Some of you got to meet my GypsyRose..many of you didn't. I was not a member when Gyp was this side of the bridge.
Lianne you were the instructor who showed Maria how to train Beau, Gypsy's big sable son. Beau then in went on to trial at the WDOC..and managed a high aggregate score in trial along with highest score by a conformation champion, highest scoring herding dog, and three high in classes awards over the four trials.
Well on August 19 at exactly (to the day) 12 years 5 months, Ch.Kerhaven's Mr Bojangles CD, CGN 'danced' over the bridge taking a big chunk of Maria's heart and mine with him. Only not quite 2 months earlier..his tri brother Vinnie, the only other male in that litter had also crossed the bridge. Starting this year off Sierra, Ch. Kerhaven's Touched by an Angel had crossed over just before her twelfth birthday followed by her beautiful sire Ch. Valiant Leonine Star in April . Zoey and Vienna had crossed over (zoey hit by a car as a pup) Vienna (Ch. Kerhaven TheRose of Warquablen) with a large inoperable growth (benign) on the side of her mouth making it impossible to eat anymore without alot of bleeding, had both crossed some years earlier.
Now we are down to one offspring...Ch. Kerhaven Seasons In The Sun HIC aka Venus. Venus will be 13 March 19th 2011. She is the loved companion of Terry-Lynn Nugent and her daughters Brook and Katie.
Venus lives on a farm near Vanscoy Sk.
Venus has had quite a life on the farm. she has proven an invaluable asset over the years..as a chum and guardian/playmate for Terry's lovely daughters then aged 4 and 2. She saved Terry's husband from being gored by an angry cow whose calf he was tagging. The cow charged, he ran, tripped and if Venus hadn't intervened he would have been badly hurt. But Venus, only 14 months old herself..never trained as a working farm dog, only having belonged to them for three months, instinctively 'knew' what to do. Charging between him and the cow she launched her slim body at the head of the animal causing it to veer to the side missing, barely the fallen man. Then Venus proceeded to keep the animal at bay while Terry's husband scrambled to safety. After that the sun rose and set on her little tri back as far as Terry and her hubby were concerned.
When the girls reached school age, Venus would escort them down the long driveway to board the school bus. After school Venus would always be sitting waiting for the girls at the end of the driveway.
When Venus was about three, she caught and killed a fox that was trying to raid the chicken coop. During the brief death fight, Venus was bitten on her leg, thus she had to be quaranteened until the provincial lab was able to examine the fox head and deem it free of rabies. That was a TENSE few days for the folks who loved her. Despite having current rabies vaccine..a bite from a rabid animal usually winds up with the injured dog being put down anyway for safety. Venus produced four litters but none of the pups were sold to show homes..going instead as companions and/or fam dogs. One of her pups distinguished himself by saving his owners two year old child after the tot fell in the creek.
Gypsy made a fine litter..as wise and loyal and talented as she was. I lost my loved old friend in 2007 due to an accident. Gypsy died Dec. 31, 2007 just 63 days short of her 12 birthday.
Now all that is left is Venus...she is still doing well. Her appetite is good, she still chases any winged or four footed trespassers that dare to set foot on HER territory. She loves to hunt gophers but still has not caught one:>) Healthy though she is, her times is growing short. Collies live on AVERAGE, 12-14 years..some a bit longer..most if they are healthy and well cared for will reach at least 12.
I just wanted to talk a bit about these collies who have so won my heart. The BEST of them being my own Kerhaven Sunnybank Silhouette HIC, CGN, ROM..my own sweet GypsyRose, my CAN-DO girl..who I shall never stop missing. I will try to add a pic to this blog of Venus..taken just a few days ago, if I can figure it out. Thank those of you who take the time to read of my old friends final offspring.

Things I've learnt...

Things I have learnt from being a member at Wascana Dog Club

1. When Carol says “Bring boots” to the tracking test she means TALL BLACK RUBBER boots, not those expensive short waterproof hiking things you just bought for lots of money!!!

2. When in retrieving class never throw a dead duck by it’s neck – Hmmmm – the head might be the only thing left in your hand!

3. Before you enter the showring behind all the “big boys” and the winning girls you need to put down that first place blue ribbon your boy just got when he ran around the ring by himself. It looks just a little amateurish to prance around with your cherished little ribbon still clutched firmly in your grasp! (And yes, I still have all of them!)

4. It is frowned upon to have your dog race around through all the tunnels in a puppy frenzy the first time you try agility off leash! It probably isn’t good when the instructor’s only comment is “You named him!”

5. Having a “showdog” means spending two hours fussing, primping and brushing – the DOG!

6. These guys really use a dead duck, not a bumper for the WC trials! Help!!! Although both might be wrapped in paper, be careful not to mix up the beef with the frozen mallard!

7. Before you turn it on, make sure you aren’t pointing the blowdryer nozzle at all the show entry papers and receipts you piled on top of the crate.

8. If you are going to put the treat in your mouth to encourage your dog to sit correctly on the obedience recall – make sure it’s not something disgusting! The dog doesn’t know what to do if you are spitting all over the place!

9. Wet Golden’s take more than one hour to blow dry completely!!
10. Never invite the "hubby" to come watch the dog show from ringside - BIG mistake unless you want the dog to be constantly facing the wrong direction as he spends all his energy looking for "the other half!"
11. If there is an error, whether tracking, retrieving, showing or obedience – it’s NOT the dog but rather the HANDLER......

And lastly – life is just more fun with a dog in it!

I am trying to get Dream ready for the up coming Rally O trials at WDOC..she is doing much better then I am. But that is 'par' for the course:>) She is one smart cookie..and is kind enough to let me go along for the ride:>) I am seriously considering putting Dream in the Caro Rally trial as well..I am putting Ilmari in Caro..we need one more leg for his RN. Haven't quite made up my mind about Dream, but I am 'thinking' it over. Chrissy is entered in the WDOC obedience trail coming up swiftly..she needs one more leg on her PCD..though she is not ready for novice (her heel off lead sucks) I will move her up once she gets that final leg for PCD. Nothing ventured..nothing gained.
Freedom, as some of you are aware, had surgery Aug. 20th. she had a cancerous kidney removed. she is now cancer free...and though it was expensive..it was worth it to have my girl safe and strong, and healthy..I am fortunate we caught it before it spread. Lastly I have after looking at many studs and their pedigrees, finally selected a beautiful sable merle smooth collie. # 1 smooth collie in Canada, an Am/Can Ch. who produces absolutely wonderful looking pups stamped with his beautiful head detail and strong body. So sometime next spring once again I will hear the pitter patter of many little feet and the endearing whimpers and yips of healthy collie babies..music to my ears:>) Dream will be the mother and she will become even more lovely when she gives Charisma a handsome brother or 2 or 3, lol, and beautiful sisters too.

For those of you who don't know me - I am "Rowdy's" mom. Although I have had dogs around me since I was 5, I only joined the Wascana Club a year ago. Since I had one of Carol's puppies I got invited to "puppy parties", encouraged to attend classes, join the club and even to show him in the showring! I did get a little carried away and before I knew it I had Rowdy in obedience, rally, retriever class, conformation and tracking.... Hmmmm - It's a wonder that the poor dog knew whether to sit, stand, put his head down and sniff or up and "show off" - run in front of me, run at heel with me. It's amazing he has done so much.

I hope that this blog can be a place where our members/friends can share some of their stories and their accomplishments with others. Feel free to write a note, tell us a story or even lament about the "almost passed" experience. Been there - done that! If you can include a picture or two of your dog(s) that would be fantastic. I also have mentioned a couple of favorite links and upcoming events - would really like it if others can play around with the site and add details.
